The Secret Life of Urban Foxes

Foxes are no longer just creatures of the countryside. In many cities around the world, these clever animals have made a new home among humans. They hunt at night, raise their young in hidden gardens, and have learned to thrive in a world of concrete, traffic, and leftovers.

📖 Level 1 - Beginner:

Foxes live in some big cities. They come out at night. Urban foxes eat food from trash cans. They also eat rats and birds. Foxes hide in gardens or under sheds. Mother foxes have babies in spring. The babies are called cubs. Cubs learn to find food in the city. Cars are very dangerous for foxes. But many foxes stay safe. They are smart animals. People sometimes see foxes near their homes. Foxes do not hurt people. They just want to eat and sleep. City life is hard, but foxes survive well.

📖 Level 2 – Intermediate:

Foxes have moved into many large cities around the world, including London, Berlin, and Tokyo. These urban foxes are mostly active at night. They eat leftover food from garbage bins, as well as small animals like rats, pigeons, and insects. Unlike country foxes, city foxes are less afraid of people and traffic. They raise their cubs in quiet places such as under garden sheds, in empty buildings, or under porches. Spring is the main breeding season. A mother fox usually gives birth to four or five cubs. The cubs stay in the den for about a month. Then they start following their parents to learn how to find food safely. Sadly, many cubs do not survive their first year because of cars and diseases. Still, foxes are very adaptable. Scientists have noticed that urban foxes have smaller territories than rural foxes because food is easier to find in the city.

📖 Level 3 – Advanced:

Over the past several decades, red foxes have successfully colonized urban environments across Europe, North America, and Asia. Far from merely visiting cities, these adaptable canids now establish permanent territories within them. Urban foxes exhibit distinct behavioral changes compared to their rural counterparts: they are predominantly nocturnal to avoid human activity, yet they display reduced flight responses when encountered. Their diet consists heavily of anthropogenic food sources—discarded takeaway meals, leftovers from compost bins, and even pet food left outdoors—supplemented by synanthropic prey such as rats and feral pigeons. Breeding typically occurs in late winter, with dens (or “earths”) situated in remarkably concealed locations: beneath concrete slabs, inside drainage systems, or among dense shrubbery in private gardens. A vixen may produce a litter of four to six cubs, which remain dependent for up to three months. Mortality rates among urban fox cubs are alarmingly high, with vehicle collisions and sarcoptic mange being primary causes. Nevertheless, population studies indicate that urban foxes often achieve higher densities than those in rural areas, owing to abundant food and reduced hunting pressure. Their success offers a compelling glimpse into wildlife adaptation in the Anthropocene.
