He dug a tiny hole, placed one seed inside, covered it with soil, and poured water from an old jug. Neighbors watched and laughed. "That hill is dead," they said. "Nothing will grow there." The old man did not answer. He returned the next day and the day after. For ten years, rain and sun came and went. The old man's hands became rough. His back became bent. But he never missed a day. Then one spring, something changed. The hill turned green. Small trees became big trees. Flowers grew between the roots. Birds built nests. Children climbed branches and picked fruit. The neighbors stopped laughing. One evening, a child asked the old man, "How did you grow a whole forest?" The old man smiled and said, "I did not grow a forest. Every day, I planted one small piece of happiness. I did this for ten years. That is all." The next morning, the old man was gone. No one ever saw him again. But the forest still stands. "You are wasting your years," she said. He wiped his forehead and said nothing. Ten years passed. The old man's hair turned white. His steps grew slow. But the hill did something unexpected. It blushed green. Saplings became trees. Trees bore fruit. Vines curled around rocks. One morning, the village woke to the sound of birdsong—a sound none had heard in decades. Children ran up the slope to discover figs, berries, and shade. The old man sat beneath a walnut tree he had planted on his very first day. A little girl approached him and asked, "Grandfather, how did you grow happiness on a dead hill?" He chuckled softly. "I did not grow happiness, child. I grew seeds. One seed each day. Happiness was simply what grew while I was not looking." The next dawn, his daughter climbed the slope to bring him breakfast. His walking stick leaned against the walnut tree.
