The Day the Paint Splashed Back
A young girl's art project goes horribly wrong, but a creative accident turns into a masterpiece. She learns that mistakes can be the beginning of something beautiful.
Lily had been hoarding the thick watercolor paper for six weeks, waiting for the perfect moment. The school's annual art showcase was tomorrow, and she was going to paint Miloāher tabby catāwith museum-quality precision. She worked for three hours, layering shadows on his fur, leaving a sliver of white for his whiskers. Then, as she reached to clean her brush, her elbow caught the edge of her coffee mug (which, tragically, was full of water). The cup tipped, and a dense wave of blue flooded her painting. Milo's face dissolved into a tie-dyed blur. Lily gasped. Her cheeks reddened. She thought about tearing it up and starting over.
Then her art teacher, Mrs. Reed, appeared at her side. She placed a gentle hand on Lily's shoulder. "Don't move," she whispered. "I see something here." She handed Lily a sponge and a salt shaker. "Add more water. Let the colors talk to each other." Lily hesitatedāthis was the opposite of everything she had learned about control. But she let go of her perfect plan. She dripped, tilted, and splashed. The colors swirled into stunning, accidental shapes. A sea of blue became the sky. Lost brown strokes became tree branches. When it dried, the painting looked like Milo in a dreamāsurrounded by watercolor clouds and melting into the cosmos.
It won first prize. Lily's friends asked how she made it. She just smiled and said, "I made a mistakeāand kept going."
