The Strange Island Where Animals Rule Everything

The Strange Island Where Animals Rule Everything banner

📖 Level 1 - Beginner:

There is a small island in Japan. It is called Okunoshima. There are almost no people there. But there are many rabbits. Hundreds of rabbits live everywhere. They run on the roads. They sleep under trees. They ask tourists for food. The rabbits are not afraid. They think the island belongs to them. Long ago, people made poison on this island. Now only the rabbits stay. They rule everything.

📖 Level 2 – Intermediate:

Off the coast of Japan lies a small island called Okunoshima. Today, it is famous for one thing: rabbits. Hundreds of wild rabbits hop freely across roads, beaches, and old buildings. Tourists visit just to feed and photograph them. The rabbits show no fear of humans. They run toward visitors and beg for food. But the island has a dark history. During World War II, Japanese factories on Okunoshima produced poison gas. Workers tested chemicals on animals. After the war, people left the island. The rabbit population grew and grew. Some say the rabbits are descendants of test animals. Others think people released pet rabbits. Either way, the rabbits now rule. There are no cars, no predators, and almost no people. The rabbits sleep wherever they want. They cross roads slowly. They have become the true owners of the strange island.

📖 Level 3 – Advanced:

Okunoshima, a small island in Japan's Inland Sea, presents an almost surreal scene: hundreds of wild rabbits roaming with absolute freedom and zero fear of humans. Tourists arrive by ferry carrying bags of rabbit food. The moment they step ashore, they are surrounded by a furry mob demanding treats. Rabbits sprawl across walking paths, nap under park benches, and chase each other through the ruins of abandoned military structures. Yet this peaceful, fluffy paradise conceals a grim past. During World War II, Okunoshima served as a secret facility where the Japanese military manufactured over six kilotons of chemical weapons, including mustard gas and tear gas. After the war, the island's factories were destroyed, records were sealed, and the island remained uninhabited for decades. How rabbits came to dominate the island remains uncertain. One theory suggests test animals escaped or were released. Another claims schoolchildren released pet rabbits in the 1970s. Whatever the origin, the rabbits now outnumber humans by hundreds to one. With no natural predators and a steady supply of tourist handouts, they have claimed every inch of the island. Old poison gas storage buildings now serve as rabbit shelters. Walking trails double as rabbit highways. On Okunoshima, the rabbits don't just live on the island. They own it.
